The fact that André Léon Marie Nicolas Rieu would pursue a career in music was more or less predetermined. His father André Rieu Sr. was already chief conductor of the Limburg Symphony Orchestra - for André Rieu, classical music was therefore a major part of his life from an early age. Born in Maastricht in 1949, the musician began violin lessons at the age of five. He later attended the conservatories in Liège and Maastricht and was under the tutelage of the Hungarian violinist André Gertler in Brussels. Driven by the desire for classical concerts to spread joy and enthusiasm and become more suitable for the masses, Andre Rieu played pieces from various genres, such as waltzes, musicals, opera and pop songs, in addition to classical works from the very beginning. In 1987, the star violinist put together the Johann Strauss Orchestra, with which he toured the entire globe from then on. André Rieu is now supported by his 60-strong team in realising his successful concept - the combination of modern sound and 19th century Viennese music.
With around 100 concerts a year and over 40 million CDs and DVDs sold, André Rieu is one of the most successful artists of our time. Every concert by André Rieu and the Johann Strauss Orchestra is a true experience, not only because of the overwhelming live music, but also because of the phenomenal backdrop offered to the fans at the show.
